Kauai books - Comparing Apples and Oranges
I purchased the Ultimate Guide first, read it cover to cover, marked it up, used it, carried it in my pack daily and would rate it 5 stars too, but this other book is excellent too - especially if you're not pressed to spend a day or two on the Garden Isle (my favorite place in the world) and leave. I lived in Hawaii for 3 years and in a few days will be making my third trip back to Kauai in 4 years (16 days this time - the trips just keep getting longer). It's not either/or comparing this book and the Ultimate Guide - I suggest you buy 'em both. I believe they compliment each other well. For what it costs to get to Kauai and stay there, this book is money well spent - it will save you lotsa time which is $$$$$. If you're GEN X and only want one book - get this one; if you're just going to drive around the island, get just a road map and freebie brochures at your hotel or the airport.

Great Guide
Love the "Trailblazer Kids" part, too. I don't leave for Kauai for another three months, but I've already scoured this book, higlighted parts and turned down pages on all of the trails I'd like to explore. Got the book for all the detailed outdoor adventures, but appreciate the Hawaiian phrases and recommended restaurants, as well. Written with so much "insider's info. ".

Best book for exploring natural Kauai
This book offers many hikes at varying degrees of difficulty and length all over the island, not just the 'hot spots'. My wife and I went to Kauai for the sole purpose of enjoying the island's natural beauty and intended to do a lot of hiking. It also provides a lot of tips and pointers on trail conditions and what to expect in certain areas. By the time we got to the trailhead we felt very prepared and no surprises, which is very good when heading out on a 8+ mile hike! The descriptions are good as well as the summary key codes provided throughout the book for quick reference. We used this book to organize our entire time on the island. If visiting, you must see the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon! On our next visit we will hopefully get to Alkali Swamp. The many pictures in the book are also helpful. .
