Necessity if you want to trek, volcano-climb, raft
2004) and with this book. My friend and I traveled with the Lonely Planet Guatemala book (published Jan. They complemented each other very well. Lonely Planet has terrific practical info (bus schedules, etc. ) but little info on how to climb volcanoes, go trekking, rafting, horseback riding, etc. Adventure Guide to Guatemala had what we wanted: volcano/trekking-off-the-beaten-path info. Our travel style is extremely independent (we wanted to ascend volcanoes without a guide) but the book is very appropriate as well for people who prefer to work through formal ecotour companies or guides, or people who can afford nicer ecolodges and bed-and-breakfasts. They are all listed in this book. There is extensive information on how to explore the Mayan archaeological sites.
