Stikine River: A Guide to Paddling the Great River
Format: Paperback
Author: Jennifer Voss
ReleaseDate: June, 2001
Publisher: Rocky Mountain Books
Rating:
Pretty good
The river maps are great but not quite good enough to serve in place of topo maps -- we had both. I used this guidebook to paddle the Stikine with a friend in August 2004. We paddled both the Spatsizi to the upper Stikine and the lower Stikine to Wrengall. My biggest complaint is that many of her minor hiking trails didn't exist. This is unspoiled nature and if there is no trail, it will take you HOURS to trek a mile. Other than that, the book was quite informative and had good descriptions of the few rapids encountered. The Stikine River itself is remote and gorgeous. It's an adventure I won't forget!.
Read before you go
If you are a fan of Patterson this book is fun to read as a modern guide to the river so you can see the photos of the country Patterson did not include in "The Dangerous River". If you are planing to go to the Nahanni country for any reason you need to read this book. The book is a a typical guide book and may be a little dry just to read for fun, but once again if you plan to go, get it. The author didn't write the book by looking at a map and reading a few stories, has been there and done it.
