In short, it was written by a guy who knows nothing about offroading. The book, "Four-Wheeling on Southern Vancouver Island: Victoria to Tofino" is pretty bad.
I was hoping for a book with several specific "trips" outlined. Similar to most hiking books. A map, directions to the start of the trail, a description of each trail including the route, terrain, difficulty, and possibly information about the vegetation, geology, and historical information. Instead the book is a hodge podge of notes that rambled into a handheld recorder. They are essentially useless from a planning perspective.
The author and a buddy went and explored a few Forest Service roads in his friends Geo Tracker. They'd pop in and out of side roads here or there and write about them even if they were barely classified as 4WD trails. They would turn around when the trail got beyond a 5 on their 1-10 scale. They almost included a paved road in the book, and he goes on at great length about how a 2WD is capable of doing most of these "trails". They included all areas they explored regardless of whether or not they are actual trails, lead to a desirable destination, etc. Frankly, I can't believe the publisher even allowed this to be printed.
Thumbs down. Don't waste your money even if it for a used copy.
