Compelling
I was so incredibly floored with the journey these men took to the top. I, like many out there, became obsessed with learning more about Everest after the recent Discovery Channel mini series. While having dinner with a friend one night, we got into a long discussion about the Discovery show and how we just couldn't get enough of it. The friend recommended this book to me and I'm very grateful they did. I hadn't heard of this author or book before.

Definitely one of the best books I've read in a long time. It didn't last long enough either!

Tragedy at 29K
After becoming addicted to the "Everest" show on Discovery channel, I really wanted to read this book. I have always been an avid outdoors man, but I have only recently become interested in mountaineering.

Once I started to read it, I instantly realized that the show only scratches the surface in the long and strenuous journey to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Jon Krakauer takes you on a journey and describes his childhood dream of climbing the world largest mountain and the tragedy that immediately ensued. Krakauer describes the infinite number of elements and scenarios that hinder the trek up Everest. He describes the journey as one that no man or woman could adequately prepare for, simply because it is impossible to foresee what the mountain will throw at you. Even when you think that you have the mountain conquered and figured out , Krakauer reveals that the human element could be the most dangerous element of all.

It will leave you breathless. .

Total mindblowing for real halucinagenic trip
The agonizing trip to the top was a success? Think again, you got to get back down. What a terrific writer, very descriptive, I lived every moment with Jon in his book.

I was in college in the late 60's and early 70's and survived the LSD movement. Jon Krakauer's book flashed me back to the same brain twisting frame of mind. Their torn, worn out, oxygen depleted bodies became subject to increadable fears, halucinations and the will or non will to survive. It's like a trip gone bad, really really bad. Total insanity, death on a stick, my God, I could hardly read it, let alone experience it.

I really had no interest in climbing mountians but this was highly recommended by a friend. At first, I thought I would read a chapter or two and tell my friend that this kind of book was not for me. Wrong! I was astonuded by the outstanding character descriptions, Jon let you know the players like he did with his brilliant descriptive writing that just keeps drawing you in. Wow, what a masterpiece. .
